You’re in a coffee shop when you overhear a snippet of a conversation that changes everything—your perspective, your plans, your life. Write the scene as if the protagonist wasn't meant to hear it. Here’s the twist: You can’t use the words “secret,” “life,” or “change.” Keep it under 200 words and make it crackle with tension.

I sat at a corner table by the entrance. A small decorative column partly hid me from prying eyes. I don't mind that other people exist, I just don't want them near me or talking too much.

Then I heard my mother's voice behind the curtain dividing my table from the next one. The fabric was dense and dark enough to soak up light, not the sound.

"Joe ruined my life; he wasn't meant to get out of that biosimulation".

I froze. I was Joe, last I checked. That was definitely my mother. My thoughts spiraled—denial, confusion, panic—all crashing into each other like shards of glass.
