John Dies at the End (2012), the movie poster

Remember my review of Phantasm (1979)? Director Don Coscarelli is back on our radar with another batshit-crazy cocktail.

This time he's blended sci-fi with absurd comedy and a healthy pinch of horror. At the center are two slackers, David and John, who accidentally stumble into an interdimensional shitstorm of cosmic proportions. No spoilers, but broadly speaking, it starts off as an experimental comedy à la Cabin in the Woods, gradually turns acid, then goes full-blown Doctor Who homage by the end.

Is it fucked up? Exquisitely. Masterfully so. Especially if your consciousness is slightly altered—which boosts empathy for the characters, seeing as the entire plot revolves around some weird-ass substance... Alright, I've already said too much. Moving on.

Imagine you have an axe. You've slaughtered tons of zombies with it. Over time, the handle wears out, so you replace it. Then the blade wears out—replaced again. Now you're faced with the philosophical nightmare: Is it still the same axe you used to off your very first zombie, or a completely new one? This existential clusterfuck is exactly what David ponders in the film's opening scene, drop-kicking your perception right through the window.
