The show presents to us LA, in which the narrative ties a knot of lives from polar social layers.
The main plot can be described through two memes:
- “how it started—how it’s going”
- “…that escalated quickly!”
What started as a road rage episode (or should I say “parking lot rage”?) evolved into a full-fledged cascade of nasty pranks, dragging in other people and their property. However, the showrunners didn’t seem to make this chaos the first and foremost; instead, the developing chaos served more as a backdrop. Within those circumstances, the main dish was served: an 8-episode rumination on how unhealed traumas can only produce new ones. How a good person, heroically carrying a burden they cannot bear, may dig themselves deeper and deeper under the pile of guilt, sadness, loneliness, futile anger, etc. “Choose your poison,” as if the authors were suggesting to the characters.
Were there any answers in that show? Barely.
Did I need any? Hardly.
Did I enjoy what I saw? Abso-freaking-lutely. Despite the tension that had me dying from cringe at times, it was a nice binge-worthy show. Hysterical at times, deep at others, quite-well balanced.
Not a masterpiece, in my opinion, but still a worthy circus-like tale of empathy.
