astro burn, the game poster

The Steam key provided by the publisher. Whatever that means.

Great game, weird way to treat your players.

The Game

You’re a cat astronaut. Together with your robo-sidekick, you blast your way through hordes of enemies in space, trying to reach Earth so you can annihilate all the assholes there, too. Said “assholes” include seahorses, pigs in mechs, birds, mermaid cats, monkeys... It’s trippy, yet harmless enough to make the whole thing family-friendly! No guts, no dismemberment, no swearing. Even the smart-ass protagonist never makes a single questionable joke.

some gameplay situations

Gameplay-wise, it’s an old-school scrolling shooter. Pew-pew, brightly colored shit flying at you from every direction, while you fire back with lasers, bananas, and sushi rolls—and occasionally unleash a flying roundhouse kick once your rage meter fills up. Almost every level has you moving left to right, except for one vertical stage that can seriously kick your ass. Thankfully, there’s only one. The difficulty is balanced surprisingly well, too. I started on Hard and reached the credits with 2 lives left out of 9—because how many lives would you expect a cat to start with? Regular stages alternate with boss fights, for a total of eight episodes. It’s short enough that you never get tired of it, yet somehow squeezes about as much variety out of this kind of gameplay as possible. The only thing missing is cat transformations, just to crank the insanity up another notch.

some bosses. The mermaid cat is my favorite

Ghosting

Everything would’ve been great if the developer didn’t ghost its players.

When I first launched the game, I discovered that the Steam overlay didn’t work, which also meant no F12 screenshots. Fine. There was a bug-report form linked right there in the main menu, so I reported it. Then, just in case, I also made a thread in the Steam Discussions. Half an hour later, when I tried to quit the game, I discovered that it apparently doesn’t know how to shut down properly either, lol. Steam just sits there forever with the gray STOPPING button.

So I made another discussion thread—and only then noticed something interesting: the game has about a dozen threads going all the way back to 2025, and the developers have never replied to a single one. NOT ONE. Achievements don’t unlock either, by the way, and yes, there’s a thread about that too. The publisher/developer apparently couldn’t give less of a shit.

When I contacted my person at the publisher and told them about the issues, the response was basically: “Sounds like a you problem. Why the fuck are you bothering us?” And yet the Steam overlay magically started working the next day. Nobody said a word about it anywhere. It felt less like playing a British game and more like testing some janky software from an Eastern European bank: the core functionality is polished, while everything else is dogshit.

Don’t do that.

Verdict

The game really is great. It even has a “wallpaper” mode for your cats: animated Cat TV-style backgrounds and a laser-pointer mode; that’s adorable.
